Encrypted Backup for Crypto Wallets: Why Your Computer Needs a Copy
Phones get lost, stolen, and dropped in pools
Paper backups survive phone death — if you wrote them down. Encrypted digital backups add a second layer: a password-protected JSON file on your computer that restores your wallet if both phone and paper fail.
How Metrust backups work
PBKDF2 key derivation plus AES-256-GCM encryption. Only someone with the backup password can decrypt. Store the file offline on USB or encrypted disk — not in plaintext email.
Skip backup at your own risk
You can skip during onboarding, but export later from Settings. One backup session takes two minutes; losing your only seed copy takes everything.
